“青如天、明如镜、薄如纸、声如罄”，这个是记载最多的，也是普遍认为这12字特征是判断是否为柴窑瓷器的标准。那这12字特征所指的其实就是釉和胎两个方面的特征，“青如天、明如镜”指的就是它的釉色如天，釉面光泽度好有玻璃质感，“薄如纸、声如罄”指的是它的陶土精细、胎质致密以致才能做成薄胎瓷，敲击有金石之声。实际上这些特征全是属于形容词，没有具体的指向性，柴窑釉面有细纹：见洪武年间曹昭撰写，明中期由王佐增补的《格古要论》，记载有：“柴窑器出北地河南郑州。世传周世宗姓柴氏时所烧者，故谓之柴窑。天青色，滋润细腻，有细纹，多是粗黄土足，近世少见。还见于明万历年间周履靖的《夷门广牍》一书，此件柴窑四方鱼耳尊， 会在英国拍卖会上出现。此物型制规整，古韵实足，雄浑厚重，鼓腹，四棱口露胎，通体施釉，釉质温润如玉，浮光厚泽，呈现玛瑙质感，釉面通体开片纹，宝光四射，簿如纸明如镜，富贵高雅之态尽显，底有柴字款，为收藏鉴赏之珍品，极具收藏价值。
