这是一枚制作精致的开元通宝母钱（见图）。是钱直径2.3cm，外缘轮宽2毫米，重量约3.38克。细审此钱，轮廓锋芒，钱文疏朗，笔画细劲，字口深峻，地章平整，钱肉光洁，制作规矩，精致美观，具备母钱基本特征，可以断定这就是一枚开元通宝母钱，母钱实际上是翻砂铸钱的钱模。据有关资料记载：按照制作方法的不同，母钱可分为雕母和铸母两种。雕母是用手工雕刻而成，其质地有木、牙、铜、锡四种。雕母是用来翻铸母钱的，母钱也称为铸母，作为翻砂铸钱的钱模。有时雕母也用来作为钱模直接铸钱。铸母即母钱，由雕母翻铸而成，是翻砂铸钱的钱模。

唐代以前的铸钱基本是用泥陶范、石范、铜范浇铸铜钱。从唐代开始才采用先进的翻砂法铸钱，大大提高了铸钱的产量和质量。作为钱模的母钱便应运而生。历代母钱原本数量就非常稀少，加上反复使用的损坏，铸后销毁种种原因，大多已不见踪影，偶然幸存下来也是凤毛麟角。因而，留存至今的目前的历史价值和收藏价值就不言而喻了。
