一万元牧马图发行于1951年5月17日，其时正值解放战争结束不久，流通市场物资匮乏，又是在偏远地区发行的货币，因此发行规模很有限。短短三年零十一个月之后，这张纸币就停止流通了，使得总体发行量少之又少。另外，建国初期，纸币技术水平低下，尤其造纸工艺欠缺，导致当时的货币极易被磨损破坏，以前人们也没有人民币收藏意识，六十年时间里绝大多数票王已经被损耗掉了。这种种原因综合起来，造成第一套人民币壹万圆牧马图存世量以两位数计，而其中品相在九品以上的甚至不超过五张,这意味着高品相的第一套人民币大全套至多不会超过五套。

牧马图被专家誉为十二珍品之首，目前市场体系超过了本身价值的100倍，价格达500多万，第一套人民币稀少，而牧马图更是不可多见，由于当时防伪技术的不完善，导致目前市场假币泛滥，从而更加抬高了真币的价格。
